Vedoneire History

The Vedoneire Story: A Legacy of Craftsmanship & Innovation

Vedoneire’s journey began in the 1940s with Hamilton Livingston, a man of entrepreneurial spirit and a deep passion for quality fabrics. A Quaker from Lurgan, Hamilton had spent years lecturing in textiles before moving to Dublin in the 1930s to work in manufacturing. Shortly after his 60th birthday, alongside his sons Gilbert and Stanley, he established Vedoneire in a modest rented room above a funeral parlour on Montague Street, Dublin.

From the very start, Vedoneire was built on a foundation of quality, honesty, and craftsmanship. Hamilton instilled these values in his family, ensuring that every product met the highest standards—an ethos that still defines Vedoneire today.

As demand grew, the business quickly outgrew its first home, leading to the purchase of a four-acre site in Crumlin where a large factory was built. This expansion allowed Vedoneire to not only manufacture its own range of underwear, shirts, and knitwear but also produce high-quality fabrics for export. Under the leadership of Stanley and Gilbert, Vedoneire formed strategic partnerships abroad, investing in cutting-edge knitting technology that secured large orders from countries as far-reaching as the USA and the former USSR. Gilbert oversaw the technical innovations, while Stanley built strong relationships with suppliers, customers, and financial partners.

With success came further growth, leading to the acquisition of two additional manufacturing plants in Drogheda and Monasterevin. Vedoneire became a household name, employing generations of skilled workers who took pride in their craft. The company wasn’t just a workplace—it was a community where many lifelong friendships (and even marriages!) were formed.

In 1985, Stanley’s son, Mark, joined the business, ushering in a new era of innovation. Recognizing the shift in global markets and retail landscapes, Vedoneire expanded beyond underwear and knitwear to introduce outerwear, evolving into a fully-fledged lifestyle brand. Investment in design, IT, and logistics allowed the company to reach a broader international audience, culminating in deliveries to 46 countries by 2015.

Today, Vedoneire continues to honour its rich 70+-year heritage, blending timeless craftsmanship with contemporary design. Every garment is a testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to quality—pieces that aren’t just worn but treasured for years to come.
